CBA Needs You! |
|
The CBA Awards of Excellence doesn't happen without broadcasters stepping up for each other. We need volunteer judges to reciprocate for the states that judge our contest.
This is your chance to be part of that process.
Judging is quick, easy, and genuinely fun. You’ll get a front-row seat to the best creativity, storytelling, and production from broadcasters outside Colorado, ideas and inspiration you can add to your professional toolkit.

Investing in Investigative Excellence: CBA Scholarship Spotlight |
|
Congratulations to Jaclyn of KMGH, who was awarded $325 from the CBA's Broadcast Education & Development scholarship fund to attend the 2026 IRE Conference.
Jaclyn had this to say about receiving a scholarship, "I’ll be attending the 2026 IRE Conference this summer to sharpen my investigative skills, be inspired by outstanding work from across the country and bring fresh ideas back to our newsroom and our viewers. I know I’ll return energized, with new tools and connections to tackle stories that truly matter in Colorado.
I couldn’t do it without the support of the Colorado Broadcasters Association and the leadership at KMGH Denver7 — thank you so much for making this possible." |

ABIP Moves to an Annual Schedule
The Alternative Broadcast Inspection Program (ABIP) will move from a 2 years on, 1 year off schedule to offering annual inspections from early spring to late fall.
With the addition of Colorado's own John Baich as ABIP inspector for the CBA the program is now available every year. This provides a solution for stations that failed prior inspections, are undergoing ownership changes or would simply like to have the peace of mind, and certification, confirming their stations are in compliance.
Stations found in-compliance are granted a 3 year grace period, during which stations are exempted from further routine inspections by the FCC. Any non-compliance found by the inspector will not be reported to the FCC nor any other governmental agency. A detailed report of any non-compliance items and "best practices" is provided after each inspection.
If your station is in need of an ABIP inspection this summer, use the link below for more details, pricing and an application.

Proposed ballot initiative would add ‘a fundamental right to know’ to Colorado’s constitutional bill of rights
By Jeffrey A. Roberts CFOIC Executive Director
An initiative for the fall ballot filed Friday by the leaders of the Independence Institute and the League of Women Voters of Colorado would enshrine in the Colorado Constitution “a fundamental right to know the affairs of all levels of state and local government.”
The transparency proposal is the product of several months’ work by a diverse alliance of groups that also includes the Colorado Freedom of Information Coalition, Colorado Common Cause, the Colorado Broadcasters Association, the Colorado Press Association and the American Civil Liberties Union of Colorado.

State lawmakers try again to alter CORA with no journalist exemptions
By Jeffrey A. Roberts CFOIC Executive Director
State lawmakers are trying for the third straight year to give state and local government entities up to three calendar weeks to fulfill many Colorado Open Records Act requests.
Senate Bill 26-107, introduced Wednesday, is nearly identical to a measure vetoed last year by Gov. Jared Polis. A major difference: This year’s bill does not exempt a “newsperson,” as defined by Colorado’s press shield law, from extended CORA response deadlines.
