The Colorado Broadcasters Association continues to fight for broadcasters at both the state and federal levels and your membership directly powers that advocacy. This past year, the CBA helped advance the AM Radio in Every Vehicle Act closer than ever to passage in Congress, successfully fought back against efforts to introduce categorical advertising bans through Colorado online gaming legislation, and continued defending newsroom access and transparency through advocacy surrounding CORA and Open Meetings Laws. We also proudly launched the inaugural Colorado Broadcasters Hall of Fame and celebrated another tremendously successful Awards of Excellence program with overwhelming participation from stations across Colorado.
At a time when broadcasters face increasing regulatory, legislative, and economic challenges, CBA membership delivers meaningful value through advocacy, FCC legal support, ABIP inspections, political advertising guidance, webinars, sales training, scholarships, and year-round industry representation. Membership dues and support of the NCSA program are what allow the CBA to continue providing these services while keeping Colorado broadcasters front and center with lawmakers and regulators whose decisions directly impact our industry. We encourage you to invest in the future strength and voice of Colorado broadcasting by renewing your 2026-2027 membership today. |

AM Radio for Every Vehicle: Final Push! |
|
After years of relentless advocacy, the AM Radio for Every Vehicle Act took a major step forward last week as the House Committee on Energy and Commerce voted to include the legislation in the Motor Vehicle Modernization Act of 2026, advancing it out of committee with overwhelming bipartisan support. This is one of the strongest signs yet that Congress understands AM radio’s critical role in public safety, emergency communications, and keeping local communities informed. With surface transportation legislation expected to move quickly before the September 30th deadline, the path to finally getting AM radio protected in every vehicle has never been more real.
But we are not across the finish line yet. Automakers and tech groups continue spending millions to oppose this effort, which makes this final grassroots push from broadcasters absolutely essential. Now is the time for stations across Colorado to run the AM advocacy spots, have talent talk about the importance of AM radio on the air, engage listeners on social media, and encourage audiences to contact lawmakers in support of keeping AM in the dashboard. The journey to this moment has been long and uphill. Let’s come together and bring home this win for broadcasting, public safety, and the communities we serve every day.
The NAB messages are available at the button below and we encourage stations to run them through August. There are separate messages you can run to “Thank” or “Urge” your representative, if they have not yet cosponsored. Reps. Boebert and DeGette are the only two Colorado Congressional members who have not cosponsored the AM Radio legislation. On Air talent should also talk this up and stations should post the importance of this legislation on their social media.
Your listeners are paying attention and they will engage Congress to help move the needle! |

ABIP Applications Close May 31st
by John Baich, SECC Chair & CBA ABIP Inspector Sangre de Cristo Broadcast Consulting, LLC
FCC-Approved Inspection Service for Radio and Television Stations
The Alternative Broadcast Inspection Program (ABIP) was established in 1989 to assist the FCC in confirming that broadcasters are operating in compliance with FCC regulations. If a station is certified, the FCC will not conduct random inspections on your station for a period of three years. It is important to note that this is not an insurance policy - the FCC retains the responsibility and authority to respond to all complaints against a station.
If you have participated in the past, check your certificate to confirm that you are still within the 36-month window through the end of 2026. Time to consider/budget a 2026 inspection if your certificate is going to expire, you've never had an ABIP inspection, or there have been significant changes at your station.

The CBA has recently engaged Colorado’s Congressional delegation on two important federal issues impacting broadcasters and consumers alike. First, we are encouraging lawmakers to carefully reexamine the Sports Broadcasting Act as more premium sports programming moves behind fragmented streaming paywalls, reducing free public access for viewers. Second, we continue actively advocating for passage of the AM Radio for Every Vehicle Act (H.R. 979), which remains critical to preserving AM radio’s role in emergency communications and public safety, particularly across rural Colorado.
We encourage broadcasters to reinforce these messages directly with their own Members of Congress and staff. Personal outreach from local stations continues to be one of the most effective ways to demonstrate the real-world impact broadcasting has on the communities we serve. If you would like contact information for your Congressional delegation or a sample outreach email, please contact the CBA. |
